Top 5 Podcasts
I love podcasts. I have been listening for years and have racked up 100’s of hours. How, you ask? I listen whilst I am out walking for around an hour every morning. I also listen with ear pods in the middle of the night if I can’t sleep. The great thing is I can put a timer on so that I don’t miss too much and can rewind if I fall asleep. But that is not always a great idea because I often get so involved in the podcast that I stay awake for ages. So I definitely wouldn’t listen to one of my Top 5 in the middle of the night.
So often when I write a blog post I wonder what authority I have to make comments. However, I feel like somewhat of an expert on podcast listening as I have done so much of it. For example I have listened to every single Revolutions podcast and that numbers over 350 episodes. And it is not even in my top 5. It is a very in depth exploration of the great political revolutions.
I am going to try to pick my favourites in a few different categories, that is podcasts that I always listen to and don’t like to miss.
So here goes:
Self-Publishing - The Creative Penn. This was not a hard choice in this category. Jo is very engaging and has a lovely English accent and a natural giggle. But more importantly she has been a major influence in my decision to self-publish my novel. She is exceedingly generous with so many resources freely available. She comments on all the recent publishing news, talks about what she has been doing herself as a very prolific author and has an interview with another industry expert in each of her podcasts. She is a futurist so also talks about such things as artificial intelligence, block chain and NFTs and the place they may occupy in the writing world.
Writing - So You Want To Be A Writer. This podcast is presented by the Australian Writer’s Centre hosted by Valerie Khoo. Once again there is a wealth of information and a few laughs on this podcast, along with very entertaining and informative interviews with writers. I do miss Al Tait though, now that she has gone onto other things.
News and Current Affairs - The Squiz. This is a short week day podcast and a not to be missed on my list. Claire Kimball and her podcast partners present the news highlights in a non-biased, non judgemental way which I very much appreciate. I also enjoy some of the lighter moments and Claire’s infectious laugh. In conjunction with the Podcast there is a daily newsletter.
True Crime - The Teacher’s Pet. An oldie but a goodie. This was a fantastic expose of a cold case from the 1970’s. But I probably don’t need to say more about this one because it is currently in the news with the trial of Chris Dawson just about to wrap up. Unfortunately it is not available to listen to at present due to the court case.
Society and Culture - Chat 10 Looks 3, Bang On and Conversations. Okay, so I know I said Top 5. But these three podcasts all rate a mention. Chat 10 Looks 3 is a delightfully relaxed chat between Leigh Sales and Annabelle Crabb in which they discuss what they have been reading, watching, listening to and sometimes cooking. Bang On is along similar lines where Zan Rowe and Myf Warhurst chat about music, life, art and stuff. They both have infectious laughs which I love in a podcast. And finally Conversations is a fantastic interview series hosted by Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski. This is a daily podcast so I don’t listen to every one. I think that Richard Fidler would have to be my favourite interviewer.
I hightly recommend all of these podcasts but I always enjoy trying something new. Let me know in the comments what you listen to.
