Beyond the ‘Journey’

Why is it that we steer away from the word ‘journey’? Life is often described as a winding road with innumerable unexpected twists – most of us would call this a ‘journey’. This has become the go-to term. But has it been over-used? In this post I want to explore both the limitations and power of this metaphor and discover alternative words that might be used instead.

My current work-in-progress is about my ‘journey’ to becoming an independently published author. I feel the term is appropriate. But to many, it has become regarded as a worn-out cliché. To me, on the other hand, it still holds appeal and resonates with the story I want to tell.

I think the word ‘journey’ naturally implies the many detours, setbacks and discoveries that are part of life. Everyone can relate to the idea of moving through the phases and challenges of life. And yet the term has fallen out of favour; in all likelihood, because its constant repetition makes it feel unoriginal. Or perhaps it becomes problematic because it is used instead of a more exacting description. It’s like using ‘nice’ to describe a gourmet meal - it’s not the wrong word but it doesn't capture the complexity of the meal.

Other terms that I have explored include path, odyssey, evolution, process, expedition, quest, transformation each with their own particular connotations. I am not sure whether any of these really resonate with me. So I am going to do some writing exercises where ‘journey’ is replaced with other terms to see which feels most authentic.

The right word choice can capture the complexity of personal and professional transformation. What alternative words would you use? I would love to know how you have navigated the overuse of the word ‘journey’. Tell me in the comments below.
