We’re Going to Bonnie Doon

View of Lake Eildon

A visit to Bonnie Doon was delightful and surprising. In a previous life, I regularly travelled through this picturesque country town situated on the shores of Lake Eildon. I always stopped briefly, but never more than that. What was it really like? Passing through does not give the full picture. So when my daughter suggested a weekend of bush walking, staying in Bonnie Doon, I was in.

We met up with the group at Grant St Grocer’s, a delightful cafe in Alexandra. After enjoying a very good coffee, we brought some lunch and headed to Rubicon Valley for our first walk. The scenery was wonderful.

The Bonnie Doon Caravan Park cabins where we stayed, were spacious and comfortable. After checking in we drove to a lookout where we enjoyed amazing vistas of Lake Eildon. We also stopped at the holiday home made famous in the movie, The Castle.

The day was topped off with a delicious meal at the Bonnie Doon Hotel.

After a restful night we went for a walk along the rail trail, followed by breakfast at the Bounty Bakehouse. then said our goodbyes.

Short breaks such as these are a great way to revitalise and provide inspiration. When we got home I decided to watch the classic movie, The Castle. I hadn’t watched it for many years and was surprised at how well it still held up, despite being nearly 30 years old. It is still a wonderful, feel good movie.

I have been struggling with story structure for some time with my current work in progress. Someone suggested that I watch some movies and analyse structure that way. (Thanks Jodi). So that was another benefit.

So overall, a restful short break and some homework on story structure will all help the finishing energy that I need for my current book.

What do you do for inspiration? Let me know in the comments.
