Three Bowen Brothers at War

Australia paid a huge price in World War I. More that 60,000 Australians lost their lives and over 155,000 were wounded. Imagine the families who watched on, as their sons signed up, hoping for adventure.

Several of my ancestors lie at rest on the battlefields of Gallipoli. But this story is about three of my great granduncles from the one family who enlisted. Imagine their mothers and sisters’ heartache as they kissed the boys goodbye. That was of course nothing compared to the news that one of them had died before he even entered the field of battle.

The Woodend Star published a story about the boys on 17th June 1916. It said “Three of the sons of Mr and Mrs J. F. Bowen of Hesket, responded to the empires call for men to serve at the front.”
